EXAMINATION INFORMATION & POLICIES

Exam schedules matter, which is why the exam schedule is posted along with the class schedule prior to registration; you can know and plan for your exam schedule from the beginning of the semester. Reviewing and completing outlines, as well as finishing other course assignments, should be done with your exam schedule in mind.

EXAM RESCHEDULING INFORMATION

Exam rescheduling does not happen automatically, and there is no requirement that you have such exams rescheduled. It is the responsibility of the student to select their course schedule taking the final examination schedule into account. If you are eligible to, and want to have an exam rescheduled, you must make a timely request for exam rescheduling. You will find the full law exam policy below.

College of Law policy entitles students to reschedule exams under two circumstances:

  1. Students who have two exams on two consecutive days may reschedule an exam if the start time for the second exam is less than 23 hours after the start time of the first exam.
  2. Students who have three exams on three consecutive days may reschedule an exam if the start time for the last exam is less than 49 hours after the start time of the first exam.

Two important things to keep in mind:

  1. To have a right to reschedule one of two exams, the second exam must start less than 23 hours after the first exam starts. Therefore, a morning and an evening exam on the same day would qualify, as would a morning exam following an evening exam the night before. Morning exams on two consecutive days, however, do not result in rescheduling because the second exam starts more than 23 hours after the first one starts.
  2. When a conflict exists, you can request which of your exams will be rescheduled and when but it isn’t guaranteed, as it is a matter of logistics, not personal preference. Given how complicated exam giving is, you may not get the revised schedule you would prefer. You will, however, get an exam schedule free of the conflicts our policy is designed to avoid. For example, you may prefer to reschedule one particular exam, but the other exam may be moved if several students in the latter course need rescheduling.

All requests for rescheduled examinations must be received by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs by the announced date. For spring 2024, the due date is Friday, March 22. The form is found on myUT under Law > Final Exams > Exam Rescheduling Form

We realize that in many cases students would prefer to have more time between certain exams than their exam schedule gives them. It is simply impossible to provide each person a schedule customized to his or her preferences and still administer exams efficiently and fairly. The best solution to exam preparation is keeping up with one’s courses and preparing early. That kind of preparation helps minimize stress and maximize chances for success no matter when you take an exam.

EXAM POLICIES

  1. A student absent from a final examination shall receive a grade of F unless such absence has been excused by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Except in rare cases, such an excuse will be granted only if the cause of the absence is reported prior to the examination.
  2. Authorization to reschedule examinations for compliance with the ADA will be coordinated through the offices of the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, the Registrar, and The University of Toledo Office of Accessibility and Disability Resources.
  3. Rescheduling of examinations for personal reasons will generally be permitted only if those reasons relate to the health of the student or close family member, death of family member, or employment conflicts for students in the part-time program who have full-time employment.
  4. A student who has two examinations on two consecutive days may reschedule an exam if the start time for the second exam is less than 23 hours after the start time of the first exam. A student who has examinations on three consecutive days may reschedule an exam if the start time for the last exam is less than 49 hours after the start time of the first exam.  If you have any questions about whether a particular exam would qualify for rescheduling by right, please see the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs as soon as your question arises.
  5. Examinations will be rescheduled by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in consultation with the faculty member and the student.
  6. Ideally, faculty members administer all examinations, including rescheduled examinations and accommodated examinations. If the faculty member is unable to administer such an examination, the faculty member will work in conjunction with the student and the Registrar's Office to complete a Rescheduling Examination Form.
